Forty-two hospitals in Michigan and Illinois joined the MHA Keystone: Pain Management collaborative to minimize opioid abuse, according to Midland Daily News.

1. The effort works to decrease opioid-related adverse event, enhance appropriate pain management, reduce the use of opiates statewide and better manage patient expectations.
2. McLaren Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant and MidMichigan Medical Centers in Midland, Clare, Gladwin and Gratiot will participate in the effort.
3. The MHA Keystone Center works to enhance patient safety culture along with evidence-based interventions.
4. The Joint Commission reported that significant morbidity and mortality result from inappropriate management of pain.
5. The quality of pain management differs significantly among U.S. hospitals, but pain control is a primary driver in patient satisfaction.
6. The MHA Keystone Center will collaborate with the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists to devise consistent messaging and develop efforts to reach patients and healthcare workers.
7. The MHA partakes in a statewide task force, chaired by Lt. Gov. Brain Calley, to address prescription drug and opioid problems facing the country today.
