A new study published in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery suggests a connection between pain pumps and chondrolysis development.
The study, led by Frank Noyes, MD, examined 21 patients who underwent continuous intra-articular infusion for the knee joint through high- or low-flow pain pumps. The patients were all diagnosed with postoperative chondrolysis after joint surgery and some patients experienced osteoarthritis.
The only surgical procedure successful in eliminating the patients' pain was joint replacement.
