Houston surgeons test magnetically powered knee technology

Houston-based Fondren Orthopedic Group completed the development of a magnetically powered knee technology, with orthopedic surgeons performing the first procedure using the investigational device.

Gregory Stocks, MD, president and orthopedic surgeon at Fondren Orthopedic Group, and Mark Brinker, MD, performed the procedure in Houston. Cory Couch, MD, an additional contributor to the research, also participated in the surgery. A second procedure was subsequently performed at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, according to a Fondren news release shared with Becker’s.

The technology is designed to assist the knee in bending and straightening and is being studied for patients with severe, complex knee conditions for whom traditional surgical options may be limited. The device has not been approved or cleared by the FDA for commercial use. The procedures were performed under FDA-authorized compassionate use and with approval from the respective institutions’ institutional review boards, the release said.
