There are approximately 14,160 employed orthopedic surgeons in the U.S. right now, excluding pediatric surgeons, according to May 2024 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, published April 2.

The most common work setting for orthopedic surgeons is in physicians offices, according to the data. In addition, California has the most orthopedic surgeons, while the metropolitan area with the most practitioners is near New York City.
