Here are four things to know:

1. Durham, N.C.-based Duke University School of Medicine’s Duke Clinical Research Institute conducted the “Virtual Exercise Rehabilitation In-home Therapy: A Research Study,” the first large-scale, randomized, controlled clinical trial comparing virtual physical therapy with traditional physical therapy.

2. VERITAS included 287 participants. Of the total participants, 143 patients received Reflexion Health’s Virtual Exercise Rehabilitation Assistant both pre- and post-TKR surgery and 144 patients received traditional in-home or clinic-based physical therapy.

3. The results showed an average cost savings of $2,745 per patient who received virtual physical therapy using VERA technology with clinical oversight compared to standard care with traditional physical therapy. Virtual physical therapy was not inferior for reducing disability and improving knee function.

4. VERITAS trial results will be presented at the American Health Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting in Dallas, Nov. 2-4.
