UCSF, CloudMedx aim to predict patient outcomes after hip, knee surgery — 3 notes

Healthcare artificial intelligence company CloudMedx is collaborating with UC San Francisco’s orthopedic surgery department to improve patient outcomes after joint replacement surgery.

Here are three things to know:

1. The research collaboration will study how healthcare data collected from patients’ consumer-grade wearable sensors may predict clinical outcomes after joint replacement surgery.

2. According to project leader and UCSF orthopedic surgeon Stefano Bini, MD, the current gold standard for patient evaluations are is validated patient-reported outcome surveys obtained preoperatively and one year postoperatively. Data gathered in the interim are will not be validated.

3. By using CloudMedx’s AI to read clinical notes using through machine-assisted natural language processing, the research team aims to develop algorithms that can predict a patient’s individual outcome and recovery.
