Orthopedics was among the top 10 specialties and subspecialties with the greatest number of resident physicians, according to the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges.
The AMA and AAMC report collected data on residency training programs in the U.S. Their survey covers 2024-2025 and includes information on 162,264 active residents.
Here are the 10 specialties and subspecialties with the greatest number of resident physicians:
1. Internal medicine — 32,912 residents (20.3% of 162,264)
2. Family medicine — 15,221 (9.38%)
3. General surgery — 10,741 (6.62%)
4. Pediatrics — 9,488 (5.85%)
5. Emergency medicine — 9,292 (5.73%)
6. Psychiatry — 8,210 (5.06%)
7. Anesthesiology — 7,522 (4.64%)
8. Obstetrics and gynecology — 5,996 (3.7%)
9. Radiology, diagnostic — 4,479 (2.76%)
10. Orthopaedic surgery — 4,437 (2.73%)
Among specialties with more than 100 residency programs, (not including subspecialties), orthopedics ranked No. 6 of the 10 specialties with the highest distribution of U.S.-educated MDs.
