Top 9 contributors to orthopedic surgeon burnout in 2023

The top contributor to burnout for orthopedic surgeons in 2023 is too many bureaucratic tasks, according to a Feb. 24 “Orthopedist Lifestyle, Happiness and Burnout” report from Medscape that surveyed more than 9,100 practicing physicians.

Thirty-nine percent of orthopedic surgeons reported that burnout has a strong or severe impact on their lives. Here are the top nine contributors:

1. Too many bureaucratic tasks: 60 percent 

2. Lack of respect from administrators, employers, colleagues or staff: 38 percent 

3. Insufficient compensation or salary: 36 percent 

4. Computerization of practice: 35 percent 

5. Lack of control or autonomy: 32 percent 

6. Too many hours at work: 31 percent 

7. Lack of respect from patients: 21 percent 

8. Government regulations: 21 percent 

9. Stress from treating COVID-19 patients: 3 percent
