TKA patients treated with CyMedica Orthopedics’ system have earlier return to function, quadriceps strength postoperatively

Using CyMedica Orthopedics’ e-vive neuromuscular electrical stimulation system on total knee replacement patients led to an earlier return to function and increase in quadriceps strength, according to research presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, March 12-16.

Three things to know:

1. The clinical trial assessed 66 total knee replacement patients treated with e-vive neuromuscular electrical stimulation versus the standard of care at Cleveland Clinic, according to researchers at Cleveland Clinic.

2. Patients treated with e-vive demonstrated statistically significant improvements, with a clinically significant 12.9 percent increase in quadriceps strength three weeks postoperatively. Standard-of-care patients had an average 29 percent loss in quadriceps strength.

3. E-vive patients also had increased Timed Up and Go test times at both six and 12 weeks postoperatively.
