Thompson Health earns hip, knee replacement designations

Canandaigua, N.Y.-based Thompson Health has received a Blue Distinction Centers+ for Knee and Hip Replacement designation from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

Hospitals and ASCs with the designation have an average of 21% fewer readmissions and 21% fewer complications within 90 days after knee and hip replacement surgery, according to a Sept. 9 news release from Thompson Health. 

Quality assessments are based on criteria created from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s partnership with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Here is the qualification needed to receive the designation:In order to receive the designation, facilities 

  • Have full accreditation from at least one national accrediting organization.
  • Have low complication, mortality and unplanned readmission rates after elective primary total hip and knee replacements.
  • Have enhanced recovery after surgeries and procedures in place for perioperative care. 
  • Participate in Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s BlueCard Preferred Provider Organization Network.
