The best, worst states for orthopedic surgeons to practice

Massachusetts, Delaware and North Carolina have been named among the best states for physicians to practice in 2025, according to Medscape’s “2025 Best and Worst Places to Practice, by Region,” report, published March 11. 

Medscape determined the best and worst states to practice in each region of the U.S. by compiling data from past reports, looking at compensation, cost of living, malpractice premiums, health of state residents and physician burnout levels. 

Here are the best and worst states to practice by region: 

New England

Best state: Massachusetts 

Worst state: Maine

Mid-Atlantic 

Best state: Delaware

Worst state: Maryland

South Atlantic 

Best state: North Carolina

Worst state: West Virginia

East North Central 

Best state: Indiana 

Worst state: Michigan 

East South Central 

Best state: Tennessee

Worst state: Alabama

West North Central 

Best state: North Dakota
