The paper, titled “Impact of Fascia Iliaca Block on Pain Outcomes and Opioid Consumption for Hip Fracture Patients: A Prospective, Randomized Study,” won the OTA’s 2019 Memorial Award, presented to the best resident or fellow study of the 2019 OTA Annual Meeting.
The research expanded on the use of a fascia iliaca block, a local anesthetic that is effective in providing pain relief to hip fracture patients and reduces the need for opioids.
Dr. Schulte, a resident at William Beaumont Army Medical Center – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, also won the SOMOS Norman T. Kirk Paper Award, which recognizes the best scientific paper by a military orthopedic resident.
