Data in the report comes from the American Medical Association, the Census Bureau and a national resident database. It covers more than 900,000 physicians and physicians-in-training among 48 of the largest specialties in 2021.
Here are three more workforce statistics to know:
1. Men make up 2,848 (92.9 percent) of the workforce, while there are 217 (7.1 percent) female orthopedic sports medicine surgeons.
2. There are 106,548 people per orthopedic sports medicine surgeon.
3. The field has 2,429 (79.3 percent) physicians younger than 55 and 635 (20.7 percent) are 55 or older.
