Spine, orthopedic retirements in 2025

Here are seven spine and orthopedic surgeons who retired in 2025:

1. Mark Conklin, MD, of Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center in Golden, Colo., retired on July 25. Dr. Conklin has worked with the practice beginning in 2003, according to his LinkedIn profile. He served as president of the group beginning in 2017.

2. Joe Congeni, MD, a leader in the pediatric sports medicine field, retired Aug. 1. Dr. Congeni practiced for more than four decades, including nearly 40 years as director of sports medicine at Akron Children’s Hospital. At Akron Children’s Dr. Congeni developed the Primary Care Pediatrics Sports Medicine Fellowship at Akron Children’s, the first of its kind at a pediatric hospital in the U.S.

3. William Sterett, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery plans to retire Dec. 31. Dr. Sterett spent 25 years as head team physician for the U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team and worked as a U.S. Olympic Committee Team Physician. In 2012 he received the Leland Sosman Award for Lifetime Achievement from the USSSA.

4. Edmund Rowland, MD, a hand surgeon with Golden, Colo.-based Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center, is retiring. Dr. Rowland spent 18 years with Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center, and his career spans more than three decades. He also served as a faculty member with AO North America and trained numerous surgeons in orthopedics.

5. Joel Matta, MD, a hip surgeon and founder of the Anterior Hip Foundation, has retired after a career of 45 years. Dr. Matta retired from his surgical career July 31 and his clinical practice Sept. 30. He began his career as a faculty member at the University of Southern California before moving to Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles in 1990. He joined Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2006. Since 2017, Dr. Matta has been part of the orthopedic staff at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo.

6. Gerald Kadis, MD, a neurosurgeon at Archbold Medical in Thomasville, Ga., has retired after more than 46 years of service. After completing his residency in 1979, Dr. Kadis began his career at John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital and provided care at the hospital for more than four decades.

7. Carl Sartorius, MD, of Goodman Campbell Brain And Spine in Carmel, Ind., is retiring effective Dec. He spent more than 35 years as a spine surgeon in the community.
