The San Antonio Spurs have tapped orthopedic surgeon Leah Brown, MD, to serve as the team’s new head of orthopedics.

Dr. Brown will join the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the official provider for the NBA team, according to an April 30 press release.

She will work alongside Guy Nicolette, MD, who serves as the lead sports medicine physician. Dr. Brown specializes in knee, shoulder and elbow surgery and previously served as team orthopedic surgeon for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.

In addition to working with the Spurs, Dr. Brown will provide care to patients through UT Health San Antonio. She will also assume the role of clinical associate professor in the department of orthopedics at the university.

Dr. Brown is a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, overseeing the orthopedic department for Special Ops in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

The Spurs’ current lead team physician, David Schmidt, MD, who has been with the team for 30 years, will transition to the role of physician emeritus, according to the release.
