Retired Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon Joseph Cass, MD, died in a plane crash in Brooklyn Park, Minn., on April 26, according to an April 27 report from ABC affiliate KAAL.
Dr. Cass, who retired in 2027 after a 34-year career, served as a consultant in orthopedic trauma surgery at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and taught residents throughout his tenure, earning seven Teacher of the Year awards and induction into the Mayo Fellows Association Teacher of the Year Hall of Fame in 2008.
He joined Mayo Clinic in 1983 and returned in 2005 after practicing in South Dakota and the Twin Cities.
North Dakota state Rep. Liz Conmy, a passenger, also died in the crash. Dr. Cass was flying the plane, the report said.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, according to KAAL.
