Dr. Fu received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1977 and became chair of the orthopedic surgery department in 1982. He founded the first sports medicine program in western Pennsylvania in 1986 and expanded and advanced UPMC’s sports medicine program.
He was an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon and was an expert in ACL reconstruction. He co-authored 173 book chapters, wrote more than 675 peer-reviewed articles and edited 30 major orthopaedic textbooks. Dr. Fu also received more than 260 professional awards and honors.
Along with his work at UPMC, he was the company physician for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and head team physician for the University of Pittsburgh’s athletic department.
Dr. Fu is survived by his wife, Hilda Pang Fu, four siblings, two children and five grandchildren.
