Orthopedics and orthopedic surgery is the highest-paid medical specialty, with an average annual income of over $560,000, according to a July 8 report from Medscape.
The report surveyed more than 7,000 physicians across 29 specialties about compensation and salary data between Oct. 3, 2024, and Jan. 15, 2025.
On average, orthopedic surgeons made $564,000 in 2024, $20,000 more than plastic surgeons, the second highest-paid specialty.
Orthopedic surgeons saw a 1% increase in annual salary in 2024 from the previous year’s report.
Of the 29 specialties included in the report, seven had an average annual salary of more than $500,000.
