Outpatient orthopedics is projected to save billions of dollars for the overall healthcare system, and total knee replacement could play an important role, according to an updated analysis of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association’s “Reducing Medicare Costs by Migrating Volume from Hospital Outpatient Departments to Ambulatory Surgery Centers.”

Five things to know:

1. For musculoskeletal surgeries, ASCs generated more than $3.6 billion in savings for Medicare FFS between 2019 and 2024.

2. Overall, ASCs generated $27.9 billion in savings between 2019 and 2024.

3. For musculoskeletal procedures, ASCs are expected to generate about $13.5 billion in savings for Medicare FFS from 2025 to 2034.

4. Overall, ASCs are projected to generate $84.8 billion in savings for Medicare FFS from 2025 to 2034.

5. Outpatient total knee replacement in particular is projected to generate significant savings for Medicare FFS. Total Medicare FFS surgery center savings from 2020 to 2028 would be $2.95 billion.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
