Forty-seven defendants, including orthopedic surgeons with Hempstead, N.Y.-based Total Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, were named in a racketeering lawsuit filed in the New York Eastern District Court in Brooklyn, Long Island Press reported June 30.

The lawsuit alleged that medical providers performed unwarranted surgeries on construction workers in fraudulent accidents, the report said.

Evidence for the case includes a letter from the state Workers’ Compensation Board denying authorization renewal for Vadim Lerman, DO. Abhishek Kumar. MD, is also named in the case.

Other orthopedic groups and physicians are named in the federal lawsuit, including Westbury-based New York Spine Institute owner Alexandre de Moura, MD.
