An orthopedic surgeon admitted to multiple counts of illegally prescribing pain medication to patients, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey said June 11.
Evangelos Megariotis, MD, pleaded guilty to seven counts of a 34-count indictment accusing him of illegally prescribing oxycodone, oxycontin, and oxycodone-acetaminophen to five patients, according to a news release. He issued the prescriptions between March 2017 and November 2017.
The 72-year-old physician faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 15.
