Dr. Baione operated on the duo in March at Old Bridge (N.J.) Medical Center, the feature said. Ann Kuschmick, who is in her early 50s, and her father, 82-year-old Eugene McAnuff, were doing physical therapy together to improve their hip strength.
But by January, Ms. Kuschmick’s pain was more severe. Dr. Baione suggested direct anterior hip replacements for both of them.
“The traditional posterior and lateral approach requires surgeons to cut some of the muscles that stabilize the hip, and sometimes patients are told not to move — twist or bend — a certain way during recovery,” Dr. Baione said in the feature. “The anterior approach is less invasive, causing less damage resulting in less pain in the initial postoperative period with a lower risk of dislocation.”
Both Ms. Kuschmick and Mr. McAnuff have recovered well after six weeks post-surgery, the feature said.
