Orthopedic surgeon pay hits $654K: Doximity

Orthopedics is among the top-paid medical specialties, according to Doximity’s Physician Compensation Report 2024.

Doximity surveyed more than 33,000 physicians between January and December 2023 for the report.  

Five notes:

1. The average orthopedic surgeon annual pay is $$654,815, the report said. Thoracic surgery and neurosurgery surpassed that with $720,634 and $763,908 per year, respectively.

2. Orthopedic pay remained the third highest-paid specialty from 2022 and increased. The average orthopedic surgery salary according to Doximity’s 2023 Physician Compensation Report was $624,023.

3. Orthopedics has the largest pay gap between men and women. The average salary for male orthopedic surgeons was $661,801, and female orthopedic surgeons saw an average of $559,222 per year.

4. Single-specialty group physicians saw the highest average annual pay across all specialties at $461,368. Multispecialty group physicians saw an average of $447,546, and solo practice physicians saw an average of $443,274 per year.

5. The average compensation for hospital-employed physicians was $422,146 per year.
