Orthopedic surgeon leader to know: Dr. Nicholas Bernthal of UCLA Health

Nicholas Bernthal, MD, is an orthopedic oncologist providing care at University of California Los Angeles Health. He practices at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, Calif.

Dr. Bernthal’s clinical interests include bone cancer, limb salvage, muscle cancer, Paget’s disease and spinal tumors. His work has been published in leading journals, such as Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedic, Journal of Orthopaedic Research and Cancer. He has won numerous awards over his career, including the Lloyd Taylor Award from Western Orthopaedic Association. He runs a laboratory focused on developing new implant coatings to prevent surgical infections.

 

Dr. Bernthal completed his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He completed his residency at UCLA, where he also finished his orthopedic research fellowship. He also underwent his musculoskeletal oncology fellowship at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, respectively.
