Orthopedic surgeon leader to know: Dr. Edward Athanasian for Hospital of Special Surgery

Edward A. Athanasian, MD, is the chief of the hand and upper extremity service at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He is also a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and an attending orthopedic surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, both located in New York City.

Dr. Athanasian focuses on orthopedic trauma conditions, upper extremity bone and soft tissue tumors and limb salvage and reconstruction. His research work has been published in prestigious journals, such as the Journal of Hand Surgery.  

 

Dr. Athanasian earned his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He completed his residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School in Boston and Hospital for Special Surgery. He completed a hand and microvascular fellowship at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic.
