Orthopedic sports medicine fellowship programs with publicly posted DEI statements draw in more women than those without, according to a study presented at the Arthroscopy Association of North America Annual Meeting.

Researchers reviewed the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and AANA fellowship databases from April to June 2023 to collect a list of university programs with online DEI statements.

They also reviewed whether there was a dedicated DEI faculty role at eligible sports medicine programs.

Of the programs assessed, 74.7% of programs displayed a DEI statement and 64.4% had a dedicated DEI faculty member.

Programs with DEI statements had faculties made up of 13.8% women, compared with 6% among programs that did not.

The lowest prevalence of DEI initiatives and lowest representation of women faculty and fellows were found among community-based programs, according to the study.
According to a recent analysis by Gravity Research, published May 29 by Forbes, references to DEI in Fortune 100 company reports dropped 72% between 2024 and 2025 and 26% between 2023 and 2024.
