Surgeons at OrthoIndy and the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center became the first in Indiana to use Tulavi Therapeutics’ allay Hydrogel Cap during a combined amputation and peripheral nerve procedure.
The device fits over the severed end of a peripheral nerve to block disorganized regrowth and reduce symptomatic neuroma formation. The cap gradually dissolves over approximately eight months, covering the window when neuromas are most likely to develop, according to a June 15 news release from OrthoIndy shared with Becker’s.
Renn Crichlow, MD, of OrthoIndy, performed the procedure in collaboration with Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center surgeons Ian Chow, MD, and Sameer Puri, MD.
The two orthopedic practices will continue to use the ally Hydrogel Cap on a case-by-case basis.
“This is a meaningful addition to the tools we have for managing symptomatic neuromas,” Dr. Chow said in the release. “By treating the nerve at the time of surgery, before a neuroma forms, we have a better opportunity to reduce pain, improve outcomes and help patients move forward with recovery.”
