Oregon orthopedic surgeon works with helmet manufacturer to produce 15K face shields

Orthopedic surgeon Steve Madey, MD, is working with helmet manufacturer WaveCel to develop face shields for healthcare workers at Portland, Ore.-based Legacy Health, The Bend Bulletin reports.

Three things to know:

1. WaveCel transitioned from producing bicycle helmets to face shields, and has manufactured 15,000 of the personal protective equipment so far.

2. Legacy Health, a nonprofit hospital founded in 1989, ordered several face shields, which cost $50 for a set of 10.

3. WaveCel has the capacity to accelerate production to between 30,000 and 50,000 face shields per week.
