Akron, Ohio-based Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center is the first in Northeast Ohio to offer rotator cuff-sparing shoulder replacement. Salvatore Frangiamore, MD, performed the region’s first two procedures Oct. 1.

Traditional shoulder replacement requires surgeons to cut and repair part of the rotator cuff to reach the joint. The newer approach leaves those tendons intact, which may ease postoperative restrictions and let patients start rehabilitation sooner. Dr. Frangiamore is among a small number of surgeons nationwide using the technique, according to an October news release shared with Becker’s.

“For appropriate candidates, this approach speeds up early recovery and gets people back to their daily lives significantly faster than traditional shoulder replacement,” Dr. Frangiamore said.

Shoulder replacement typically treats severe joint damage from arthritis and other conditions once nonsurgical treatments stop providing relief.

Crystal Clinic is a physician-owned hospital system with multiple locations across Northeast Ohio, offering joint replacement, sports medicine and spine care.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
