Orthopedics is the most male-dominated physician specialty, according to the American Medical Association.

“I think the key is visibility,” Jessica Aronowitz, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Northern Light Orthopedics, told WABI. “I think the key is mentorship and really encouraging medical students when going into medical school, orthopedics is a great field. It just, you know, it’s slowly changing, but it’s slow. So, there has not been a lot of movement on the percentage of women in orthopedics despite now the majority of medical students being women. For me, it’s just about other people. Seeing people like you doing something you want to do. Follow your passion, follow your path.”

There are four female orthopedic surgeons at Northern Light Orthopedics.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
