Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health’s Riverview Hospital in Red Bank, N.J., has performed its first periacetabular osteotomy, or PAO, a complex hip preservation surgery for younger patients with hip dysplasia.

Orthopedic surgeon Atul Kamath, MD, performed the procedure, which involves reshaping and repositioning the hip socket to improve alignment and preserve the natural joint. PAO is typically considered for adolescents and young adults who experience pain from hip dysplasia but have little to no arthritis, according to a Feb. 3 LinkedIn post from Brick, N.J-based OIBortho, a division of OrthoNJ.

The surgery marks the hospital’s expansion of advanced orthopedic capabilities and offers patients local access to a procedure that is typically limited to high-volume academic centers, the post said.

Hip dysplasia can lead to early arthritis and long-term mobility challenges if left untreated. Procedures like PAO aim to correct the underlying structural issue and delay or prevent the need for total hip replacement, according to the post.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
