The MSU Health Care at McLaren Greater Lansing (Mich.) Outpatient Imaging Center has added musculoskeletal ultrasound technology.
Toufic Jildeh, MD, an orthopedic surgeon who performs operations at the facility, uses the technology to assess soft tissues around joints and bones and evaluates rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendinopathy, various cysts or fluid collections, or patellar tendonitis, according to an April 28 news release.
MSK ultrasounds use sound waves, instead of magnetic and radio waves, to show real-time, high-resolution images. They can show muscles, tendons and ligaments while they are moving, making them useful in the detection of joint problems, muscle sprains and tears, and muscle and tendon injuries. They can also be used to detect fluid buildup and nerve damage.
