Most young orthopedic surgeons very satisfied with specialty choice

The majority — 79 percent — of orthopedic surgeons under the age of 40 would choose to practice medicine again if given the choice, according to the Medscape 2023 “Young Physician Compensation Report” published Sept. 26.

Orthopedic surgeons are the specialists second most likely to choose to practice medicine again, following 81 percent of general surgeons. 

Ninety-seven percent of orthopedic surgeons would choose the same specialty again if given the chancge — the highest percentage of any physician specialists.

Among physicians of all ages in 10 specialties surveyed, 90 percent or more would choose the same specialty again. 

The likelihood of physicians choosing the same specialty declined in lower-income specialties.
