The overall rate of private practice ownership continues to decline, but most orthopedic surgeons continue to work in independent settings, according to the American Medical Association’s Physician Practice Benchmark Report.

Orthopedic surgery has one of the highest percentages of private practice physicians at 54%, according to the May 29 report. Meanwhile across all specialties 42.2% are independent.

Despite the challenges, one orthopedic surgeon said he’s optimistic about private practice and believes early-career surgeons can thrive in the setting.

“My main goal is to swing [the pendulum] back toward private practice and hopefully encourage young orthopedic surgeons that it is very possible to start private practices and thrive.” Ryan Molli, DO, said. “It’s all about partnerships and making sure that you’re creating the ultimate patient experience. I truly believe if you put your patient’s experiences and needs and desires first, the rewards will come.”
