Safa Kassab, MD, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Orthopedic Specialists of Oakland County, performed the first total knee replacement in the U.S. using Pixee Medical’s Knee+ NexSight augmented reality glasses.

The wearable augmented reality platform provides real-time surgical guidance through a heads-up display in the surgeon’s field of vision during procedures, according to a May 11 news release.

The technology overlays information including bone alignment, implant positioning and surgical landmarks directly into the surgeon’s visual field without requiring the use of external monitors.

Dr. Kassab has performed more Pixee augmented reality-guided knee replacement procedures than any surgeon globally, according to the release.

The platform recently received FDA clearance and was designed for ASC settings, where total knee arthroplasty procedures are increasingly being performed, Pixee Medical CEO Sébastien Henry said in the release.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
