Portland-based MaineHealth plans to invest $70 million to develop an orthopedic care hub in South Portland, MaineBiz reported Sept. 11.

MaineHealth has already paid $20 million for a three-story office building. Another $30 million will support renovations at an existing building that will bring together MaineHealth’s orthopedic specialty practices, and about $20 million will go towards a freestanding orthopedic surgery center.

The MaineHealth Orthopedic Surgery Center will be 14,000 square feet and include four operating rooms, the report said. It will also have two procedure rooms and 16 pre- and post- op bays. Kelly Elkins, MaineHealth’s COO, said in the report that the surgery center is slated to be up and running in 2027.

Orthopedic services have been scattered around the region, partly because MaineHealth has acquired orthopedic groups in the area. The orthopedic hub aims to centralize all aspects of care and increase orthopedic patient capacity.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
