The American Joint Replacement Registry’s 2026 annual report, released Nov. 5, includes 5.2 million hip and knee replacement procedures performed between 2012 and 2025, highlighting shifts in outpatient surgery, implant use and patient outcomes.

The registry, part of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Registry Program, collected 615,330 procedures in 2025. Its database includes contributions from 1,598 institutions and 12,663 surgeons.

ASCs submitted 35,495 procedures in 2025, more than three times the volume reported in 2021. In 2025, average hospital stays were approximately one day for elective primary hip replacements and 0.9 day for primary knee replacements. About 92% of hip replacement patients and 93.3% of knee replacement patients were discharged home.

The report also found that cementless fixation in primary knee replacements increased from 1.8% in 2012 to 23.9% in 2025. Ceramic femoral heads accounted for 82.4% of elective primary hip replacements with available material data in 2025.

Among patients with linked preoperative and approximately one-year outcome scores, 76.9% of hip replacement patients and 65.0% of knee replacement patients met the CMS-defined threshold for substantial clinical benefit. Infection was recorded in 52.9% of linked knee revisions in 2025.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
