Here are 10 orthopedic surgeons to know:

Antonia Chen, MD. Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Dr. Chen is the director of research for arthroplasty services at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston. She was recently appointed to the medical advisory board of Irrimax Corp., a developer of the Irrisept wound debridement and cleansing system.

Rahul Deshmukh, MD. Southeast Orthopedic Specialists (Jacksonville, Fla.). Dr. Deshmukh is a nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, advanced arthroscopy, minimally invasive joint replacement and trauma. He serves as chief of orthopedics and director of the orthopedic center of excellence for Ascension St. Vincent's Southside Hospital in Jacksonville.

Cyna Khalily, MD. Norton Healthcare (Louisville, Ky.). Dr. Khalily is the medical director of orthopedics at Norton Hospital. He recently completed the first robot-assisted surgery with Smith+Nephew's Legion Conceloc cementless total knee system.

Daniel Penello, MD. Alexander Orthopaedic Associates (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Dr. Penello specializes in disorders of the hand, wrist and elbow. In 2019, he developed and implanted the first 3D-printed finger bone in the U.S. 

Brian Rebolledo, MD. Scripps Health (San Diego). Dr. Rebolledo has clinical expertise in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery and complex reconstruction of these joints. He has written more than 30 scientific published articles and was the first surgeon in Southern California to use a mixed reality headset for shoulder replacements.

Roy Sanders, MD. Florida Orthopaedic Institute (Tampa). Dr. Sanders is president of the Florida Orthopaedic Institute and is known for his work in orthopedic trauma. He is credited with helping design a plating system for articular fractures of the upper and lower extremities and developing a complete intramedullary nailing system for long bones. He has also written more than 100 articles, abstracts and textbooks on orthopedic trauma and serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma.

Jacob Sams, MD. Decatur (Ill.) Orthopedic Center. Dr. Sams recently completed the first smart total knee replacement in Illinois. His special interests include outpatient total joint replacement, direct anterior total hip arthroplasty and minimally invasive rotator cuff surgery.

Nancy Yen Shipley, MD. Multnomah Orthopedic Clinic (Portland, Ore.). Dr. Shipley recently debuted the Bear anterior cruciate ligament implant in the Portland, Ore., region. She is a physician for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard team and has previously worked on the medical team for the World Athletics Indoor Championships. 

Alan Valadie, MD. Coastal Orthopedics (Bradenton, Fla.). Dr. Valadie is credited with pioneering total hip replacements in Florida. He has performed more than 12,000 joint replacement procedures during his 24-year career. He also helps design joint replacement implants and performs clinical research in joint replacement surgery while speaking nationally and internationally on the topic.

Vonda Wright, MD. Hughston Clinic (Columbus, Ga.). Dr. Wright is an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon. She serves as president of Hughston Orthopaedics Southeast and previously served as the founding chief of Northside Hospital Orthopedic Institute-Sports Medicine in Atlanta and the inaugural medical director of the University of Pittsburgh Lemieux Sports Center in Cranberry Township, Pa.
