Orthopedic surgeon pay has 2nd highest increase among specialists: Report

From 2019 to 2021, orthopedic surgeon compensation increased 6.88 percent, the second highest among specialty physicians, according to a May 2022 MGMA report.

At 6.97 percent, ophthalmologists saw the highest pay increase over the two-year period.

Here are the percentage increases and decreases for physician compensation in 20 specialties from 2019 to 2021, according to the report.

1. Ophthalmology — +6.97 percent

2. Orthopedic surgery, general — +6.88 percent

3. Family medicine (without obstetrics) — +5.60 percent

4. Gastroenterology — + 4.66 percent

5. Internal medicine, general — +4.57 percent

6. Obstetrics/gynecology, general — +3.64 percent

7. Neurology — +3.48 percent

8. Surgery, general — +3.15

9. Psychiatry, general — +3.13

10. Pulmonary Medicine, general — 2.83 percent

11. Cardiology, invasive — +2.82 percent

12. Cardiology, noninvasive — +2.60 percent  

13. Hospitalist, internal medicine — +2.55 percent

14. Otorhinolaryngology — +2.06 percent

15. Pathology, anatomic and clinical — +1.79 percent

16. Pediatrics, general — + 1.77 percent

17. Urgent care — +1.24%  

18. Emergency medicine — +0.78 percent

19. Radiology, diagnostic — -0.14 percent

20. Surgery, neurological — -0.23 percent
