The work relative value units between 2019 and 2021 grew more than 7 percent, according to a May 2022 MGMA report.

The report — "Provider pay and the pandemic: Realizing recovery" looks at data from more than 192,000 physicians across more than 7,700 organizations. The data examines trends in compensation, wRVUs, regional phenomena and more.

Four things for orthopedic surgeons to know:

1. Between 2019 and 2021, the change in wRVUs for orthopedic surgeons grew 7.31 percent. Orthopedics saw the largest increase in wRVU across 20 specialties featured in the MGMA report.

2. Family medicine saw the second-highest increase in wRVUs with a 5.09 percent jump. Meanwhile, emergency medicine saw a 7.48 percent decrease in wRVUs between 2019 and 2021.

3. Orthopedic compensation grew 6.88 percent between 2019 and 2021. Orthopedics saw the second-highest increase; ophthalmology had the highest jump in that time period at  6.97 percent.

4. Only two of the 20 specialities MGMA highlighted saw a decrease in compensation and wRVUs between 2019 and 2021. Neurological surgery saw a 0.23 percent decrease in compensation and 6.99 percent dip in wRVUs. Diagnostic radiology saw a 0.14 percent dip in compensation and 0.95 percent decline in wRVUs.
