One of the first robotic-assisted awake spinal fusions performed in Florida and 26 other orthopedic milestones that took place during the first quarter of 2022. 

1. Nick Moore, MD, performed the first minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided trigger finger release in Michigan. 

2. Assure Holdings completed its first neuromonitoring case in Minnesota.

3. SeaSpine's NanoMetalene technology was implanted in its 50,000th case.

4. Mitchell Garden, MD, of Torrington, Conn.-based Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, marked 100 spine surgeries with the ExcelsiusGPS robot.

5. Beverly Hills, Calif.-based DOCS Health became one of the few practices in the world to offer spine surgery with two robots: Medtronic's Mazor X and Globus Medical's ExcelsiusGPS.

6. Medical device company 3Spine landed a $33 million series C investment round to support clinical trials of its lower back total joint replacement device.

7. Akron, Ohio-based Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center became one of the first hospitals in the region to add the Mazor X Stealth robotic surgical system.

8. Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge, La., was the first hospital in the state to perform spine surgery with OrthoPediatrics' ApiFix technology.

9. Sebastian Koga, MD, completed the world's first surgeries using Aurora Spine Corp.'s Dexa-C implant.

10. Kingsley Abode-Iyamah, MD, performed one of the first robotic-assisted awake spinal fusions in Florida.

11. Brad Prybis, MD, performed the first case with 4Web Medical's hyperlordotic lateral implant with Truss technology.

12. Dom Messerli, of the New England Medical Innovation Center in Providence, R.I., designed a first-of-its-kind spinal implant made from human bone tissue.

13. Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear, Ariz., surpassed 100 complex spinal fusions with the ExcelsiusGPS robot.

14. OrthoPediatrics completed 1,000 cases with the Firefly pedicle screw navigation guides.

15. Ernest Braxton, MD, performed the first awake robot-assisted transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion in Colorado.

16. Casper, Wyo.-based McGinley Clinic completed the state's first minimally invasive trigger finger release procedure.

17. Globus Medical said its ExcelsiusGPS spine robot has been used in nearly 30,000 procedures since it launched in 2017.

18. Scott Grabill, DO, performed the first robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, N.C.

19. Four medical device companies were honored on Forbes' best large employers list for 2022. 

20. Ran Schwarzkopf, MD, of New York City-based NYU Langone Health, completed the first case with Smith+Nephew's Journey II medial dished knee replacement system. 

21. Bonnie Simpson Mason, MD, was named the first medical director of diversity, equity and inclusion for the American College of Surgeons.

22. Sean McMillan, DO, became the first surgeon to use the Bear anterior cruciate ligament implant in New Jersey.

23. Orthopedic software company Formus Labs raised $5 million for its automated orthopedic surgery planner and partnered with Zimmer Biomet for the product's global launch.

24. Sebastian Koga, MD, completed the first cases with Aurora Spine's Apollo cervical plate.

25. The orthopedics team at Tri-County Health Care completed their 500th joint replacement.

26. The FDA cleared the Quantum Titanium Cervical Plate, the first 3D-printed anterior cervical plate.

27. White River Medical Center completed its 1,000th joint replacement surgery using Stryker's Mako system.
