Hip and knee replacements rose 18.3 percent year over year, according to the American Joint Replacement Registry's 2021 annual report.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic paused hip and knee replacements in 2020, data showed a rebound to average procedural volumes by June 2020, according to the report. Overall cumulative procedural volume growth in joint replacements was 18.3 percent compared with data from the 2020 annual report.
"The ability to return to normal procedural volume rates just a few months after the COVID-19 pandemic began is a testament to the commitment and resiliency of healthcare institutions, clinicians and patients," Bryan Springer, MD, chair of the AJRR steering committee, said in a Nov. 12 news release.
Other findings in the report include decreased length of postoperative stays for hip and knee replacements and a rise in cementless fixation.
The AJRR is the world's largest national registry of hip and knee joint replacement data and part of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' registry program.
