Several significant orthopedic developments have taken place in Florida over the past year as the state is projected to become the biggest battleground for orthopedics in the U.S.

Eight key developments, beginning with the most recent:

1. Aventura Hospital and Medical Center opened a $60 million tower that houses its Orthopedic & Spine Institute. The three-story, 90,000-square-foot facility added 60 beds to the hospital, which plans to expand the tower by seven stories.

2. Hospital for Special Surgery launched an outpatient total joint replacement program in West Palm Beach, with Martin Roche, MD, serving as director.

3. Orlando Health's $187 million Jewett Orthopedic Institute broke ground in Orlando. The 371,000-square-foot medical pavilion and outpatient surgery center will have 75 inpatient rooms and 10 operating rooms, as well as a medical office building with 12 more operating rooms.

4. The Center for Bone & Joint Surgery of the Palm Beaches in Royal Palm Beach partnered with Healthcare Outcomes Performance Company, a national musculoskeletal practice management and value-based care platform, to develop a musculoskeletal platform in southeast Florida.

5. A joint venture orthopedic and spine hospital opened at Ascension St. Vincent's Southside campus in Jacksonville.

6. Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute partnered with Altamonte Springs-based AdventHealth to develop a Rothman location in Florida. The partners are building a $100 million medical office building that will serve as Rothman's Florida headquarters. The center is expected to open in 2023.

7. Bradenton-based Coastal Orthopedics is developing a medical center that will feature a six-operating room surgery center. About 150 to 200 employees will staff the center, which will be Coastal Orthopedics' new headquarters.

8. Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa merged with Clearwater-based OrthoCare Florida to become the biggest orthopedic group in the state. The combined entity includes 150 providers and 17 locations across the Tampa Bay area.
