Orthopedic surgeon salary drops 20% — 4 key insights

The average salary for orthopedic surgeons in 2019 was $428,813, according to the "2020 Physician and Advanced Practice Salary Report" by LocumTenens.com.

The report gathered data from about 2,000 survey respondents in September 2020. Survey respondents were a mix of locum tenen and employed physicians. 

Four key insights:

1. The average salary dipped 20 percent from $539,464 in 2018.
2. About 51 percent of orthopedic surgeons are women, a four percent uptick year over year. The number of men in the field dropped four percent.
3. In 2019, 30 percent of orthopedic surgeons worked with a group practice. That's a 13 percent increase year over year. Hospital employed surgeons dropped 15 percent.
4. More than half of orthopedic surgeons are Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964.
