R. Stephen Lucie, MD, is retiring after four decades of practice in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, Baptist Health announced Nov. 2.
Six things to know:
1. Dr. Lucie and four other orthopedic surgeons founded Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute — an affiliate of Jacksonville-based Baptist Health — in 1994. The practice has grown to include 34 physicians, 12 rehabilitation centers and more than 400 employees.
2. At JOI, Dr. Lucie served as both chairman and vice chairman during his career. He also pioneered the practice's use of Makoplasty, a minimally invasive technique for partial knee resurfacing.
3. Dr. Lucie today serves as president of the Florida Orthopaedic Society. He also sits on the board of counselors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the board of delegates for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
4. Dr. Lucie's other notable contributions include serving as president of the Duval County Medical Society, the Florida Alliance of Sports Medicine Physicians and the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program, a nationally renowned high school athletics program that he helped establish.
5. Early in his career, Dr. Lucie served as the team physician for the Jacksonville Bulls, the University of North Florida in Jacksonville and Jacksonville University, among other organizations. In 1995, he became the Jacksonville Jaguars' inaugural team physician, beginning a decades-long relationship between JOI and the Jaguars.
6. Upon retirement, Dr. Lucie plans to transfer the care of his patients to other JOI physicians.
