Ed White, MD, is retiring at the end of August after a 35-year career in orthopedic surgery, according to the Boothbay Register.
Three things to know:
1. In 1986, Dr. White became the first full-time orthopedic surgeon at Damariscotta, Maine-based Miles Memorial Hospital and Boothbay Harbor, Maine-based St. Andrews Hospital. He wasn't joined until five years later by Sean Moran, MD, and a decade later by Rifat Zaidi, MD.
2. Dr. White's professional accomplishments include creating a program that the University of Geneva in Switzerland emulated to address osteoporosis and fragility fractures, influencing the formation of the multispecialty practice Lincoln Medical Partners and volunteering as an orthopedic surgeon on the island of St. Lucia more than a dozen times.
3. Miles Memorial Hospital and St. Andrews Hospital changed names when they merged in 2013. The hospitals' parent organization, LincolnHealth, has been a collaborative place to work, Dr. White told the Boothbay Register.
"This place is a 'yes' place," Dr. White said. "I learned early on that if you have a concern and you go to the administration with the problem and a reasonable solution, more often than not, they are going to accept your solution without resistance."
