Military orthopedic surgeon who served in Iraq, Afghanistan joins Iowa system

Neil Schwimley, DO, is bringing 17-plus years of military orthopedic surgery experience to Mahaska Health, The Oskaloosa Herald reports.

Dr. Schwimley joins Jon Gehrke, MD, and physician assistant Mike Johnston in Oskaloosa, Iowa-based Mahaska Health's orthopedics department.

Dr. Schwimley will provide general orthopedic surgical care, including total joint replacements and treatments for arthritis, bursitis and carpal tunnel. He specializes in sports-related injuries.

Dr. Schwimley was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in 1994 and was promoted to major within a decade. Between 2007 and 2014, he served as a military surgeon on deployments to Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan, and Kirkuk, Iraq.

In May 2019 — about six years after he qualified as a flight surgeon — Dr. Schwimley was promoted to colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

In addition to military settings, Dr. Schwimley has experience in private practices and hospitals.
