Timing of knee replacements is crucial, Northwestern study finds

Orthopedic

Researchers from Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago highlighted the significance of timing in knee replacement procedures in a Jan. 15 paper published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Three things to know:

1. Focusing on 8,002 patients who had or were at risk of knee osteoarthritis, the study found that 90 percent who could benefit from the surgery were waiting too long to have it.

2. About 25 percent of patients had the procedure prematurely when it was not required, according to the study.

3. This is the first study to prospectively evaluate the timeliness of knee replacements in a large group of patients with knee OA, according to Northwestern.
