Boston hospitals advocate for more women specializing in orthopedics

Orthopedic

Physicians in the department of orthopedics from Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center are encouraging more female medical students to pursue careers in orthopedics.

More than half of all medical students in the U.S. are women but they remain vastly underrepresented in orthopedics, accounting for only 15.4 percent of physicians in orthopedic surgery last year.

Designed by female staff, residents and fellows at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, the Bringing Orthopaedics to New England Students of Medicine Initiative offers resources to female medical students who may wish to consider a career in orthopedics.

The annual BONES workshop provides networking opportunities, panel discussions and hands-on experience with orthopedic treatment techniques, including suturing, splinting and casting.
