Here are 10 orthopedic surgeons making headlines this week.

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery's David Mayman, MD, performed total hip replacement surgery on Al Roker, a co-host of NBC's TODAY show. Dr. Mayman replaced Mr. Roker's hip Sept. 18. Mr. Roker, who is 65, had the operation to relieve severe osteoarthritis pain.

Orthopedic surgeon Jonathan Godin, MD, and former fellow of Vail, Colo.-based The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute joined the practice Oct. 1. Dr. Godin completed a sports medicine fellowship at The Steadman Clinic in 2017 before going on to practice at Carlton Clinic in Roanoke, Va., for two years.

Federal prosecutors charged Evangelos Megariotis, MD, the owner and operator of Clifton (N.J.) Orthopedic Associates, with prescribing large quantities of controlled substances "outside the usual course of medical practice and without a legitimate purpose," according to the Justice Department.

John Kennedy, MD, chief of the division of foot and ankle surgery and professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone, discusses the advantages of nanoscopes and the impact these devices will have on the field of sports medicine.

Scott Steinmann, MD, will lead the orthopedic surgery department at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Chattanooga. Dr. Steinmann is set to assume the role in October. He will replace Richard Alvarez, MD, who served as chair for the past decade.

Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health added Brent Knudson, DO, and Earl Brewley, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Knudson specializes in joint replacement of the knee, hip and shoulder. Dr. Brewley specializes in advanced shoulder and elbow arthroscopy as well as primary and revision joint replacement surgery of the upper limbs.

Former Mobile, Ala.-based orthopedic surgeon Thomas Dempsey, MD, pleaded guilty to prescribing hydrocodone unlawfully. He signed a plea agreement last week in which he admitted to pre-signing prescription forms that his physician assistants later completed.

Orthopedic surgeon Douglas Hiller, MD, was recently inducted into the International Triathlon Union Hall of Fame. Dr. Hiller was chair of the ITU's medical committee from 1994 to 2008 and was presented with the ITU's Michel Gignoux Award in August in recognition for his contribution to the sport.

Orthopedic surgeon Bret Smith, DO, joined Mercy Orthopedic Associates' Foot and Ankle Center in Durango, Colo. Dr. Smith underwent fellowship training at the Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center in Columbus. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
